Preface to the Thirteenth Edition
It gives me immense pleasure to further update the thirteenth edition of CC Chatterjee’s Human Physiology.
• Dr CC Chatterjee was one of the most dynamic academicians, a versatile teacher, devoted physiologist, noble and generous human with clinical accumen par excellence. He was a doyen physiologist and a legend. His detailed writings on all topics of physiology covered the anatomy and biochemistry with minute intricacy, so that his ardent readers of physiology from medical, dental and paramedical sciences could understand the beauty, importance and scope of physiology with utmost ease and could master the subject so as to become a competent physician.
• Dr CC Chatterjee’s Human Physiology has been read by doctors from post-Independence era of 1949 and it was nearly for fifty years the book was well read by students, faculty and researchers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, other South East Asian countries, and even many Western countries.
• Among many fans of Dr CC Chatterjee, I am the one too.
• I am happy to get this opportunity to see that the thoughts, understanding and writing of CC Chatterjee: The Legend continues. In this persuit to ensure that CC Chatterjee’s Human Physiology remains forever, I have further updated the twelfth edition and the thirteenth edition has been further edited with some exclusive features and they are:
1. The text throughout the two volumes has further been simplified, complex paragraphs made simpler, diagrams simplified with addition of hand-made diagrams for easy reproducibility, typographical errors corrected and more flowcharts added to make the book student-friendly for easy and quick recap for exam preparation.
2. Comprehensive summary of all important topics has been covered in tabular form at end of each chapter.
3. Following topics have been revamped to simpler text for easy understanding and reproducibility: Cell and functions, transport across cell membrane, tissue fluids, plasma proteins, immunity, coagulation, cardiac output, regulation of respiration, O2–CO2 exchange, GFR, renal blood flow, renal function test, formation of urine, GIT secretions, peristalsis, growth hormone, adrenal glands, pancreas, thyroid hormone, reproductive hormones, hearing, vision, apart from all other chapters.
4. MCQs have been increased under all sections. MCQs on Applied Physiology based on Clinical Case Scenarios have also been added.
5. Recent advances with Noble Prize details have been included and further modified.
6. All historical facts, recent advances and modified text have been supported with references and added at the end of chapters.
7. Most important is that the thirteenth edition is devised as per the Medical Council of India: Competency based Curriculum for the Indian Medical Graduate, 2018, 1: 92-118.
8. Other unique features of simple language and comprehensiveness, clinical case scenarios, applied physiology and important questions list have been also updated.
