Citizens are members of a political community who, in their associated capacity, have established or submitted themselves to the dominion of a government for the promotion of their general welfare and the protection of their individual and as well as collective rights. Citizenship is the status of being a citizen. It is the quality of an individual's response to membership in a community. Under art. 5 of the Constitution of India, at the commencement of the Constitution/ every person who had his domicile in the territory of India, and (a) who was born in the territory of India, or (B) either of whose parents was born in the territory of India, or (C) who had been ordinarily resident in the territory of India for not less than five years immediately preceding such commencement, should be deemed a citizen of India.
