    Description

Taylor and Francis Design Of Welded Steel Structures Principles And Practice by GHOSH U K

Design of Welded Steel Structures: Principles and Practice provides a solid foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the design of welded steel structures. The book begins by explaining the basics of arc welding, describing the salient features of modern arc welding processes as well as the types and characteristics of welded joints, their common defects, and recommended remedial measures. The text then: • Addresses the analysis and design of welded structures • Explores the design of joints in respect to common welded steel structures • Identifies the cost factors involved in welded steelwork Design of Welded Steel Structures: Principles and Practice draws not only from the author’s own experience, but also from the vast pool of research conducted by distinguished engineers around the globe. Detailed bibliographies are included at the end of each chapter. Key Features:- • Provides a solid foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the design of welded steel structures • Discusses arc welding technology, commonly used welded joints, welded joint quality, and welded steel structure economy • Includes detailed bibliographies at the end of each chapter Table of Contents Electric Arc Welding Processes Introduction Manual Metal Arc Welding Metal-Active Gas Welding Submerged Arc Welding Stud Welding Control of Welding Parameters Selection Criteria of Welding Process Safety Aspects Bibliography Welded Joints Introduction Types of Welds Types of Welded Joints Heat-Affected Zone Interacting Variables Residual Stresses Bibliography Defects in Welded Joints Introduction Defects in Welds Defects in HAZ Concluding Remarks Bibliography Control of Welding Distortion Introduction Basic Causes of Distortion Types of Distortion Control of Distortion Concluding Remarks Bibliography Brittle Fracture Introduction Factors Influencing Brittle Fracture Prevention of Brittle Fracture Learning from Failures Concluding Remarks Bibliography Quality Control and Inspection Introduction Documentation Materials Welding Procedure Skill of Welders and Operators Layouts, Templates, Markings, Jigs, and Fixtures Weld Preparation, Fit-Up, and Assembly Inspection Personnel Inspection Concluding Remarks Bibliography Design Considerations for Welded Joints Introduction Layout, Locations of Joints, and Make Up of Sections Weldability of the Material Load Conditions Joint Types Weld Types Weld Size Edge Preparations Ease of Fabrication and Inspection Concluding Remarks Bibliography Design of Welded Joints Introduction Butt Weld Fillet Weld Concluding Remarks Bibliography Fatigue in Welded Joints Introduction Fatigue Crack Design Environmental Effects Prevention of Fatigue Cracks Improvement of Welded Joints Concluding Remarks Bibliography Beams and Columns Introduction Beams Columns Connections Castellated Beam Bibliography Plate Girders Introduction Flanges Web Web-to-Flange Welds Transverse Stiffeners Stiffener-to-Web Welds Stiffener-to-Flange Welds Splices Bibliography Portal Frames Introduction Types of Portal Frames Knee and Apex Joints Rafter Site Joints Bases Bibliography Trusses and Lattice Girders Using Rolled Sections Introduction Typical Usage Advantages of Welded Roof Truss Truss Types and Characteristics Analysis Connections Bibliography Trusses and Lattice Girders Using Hollow Sections Introduction Typical Examples Advantages Types of Hollow Sections Material Quality Connections Structural Analysis and Design Parameters Local Stress Distribution Joint Failure Modes Joint Capacity Joint Reinforcement Typical Joint Details Economy in Fabrication Bibliography Orthotropic Floor System Introduction Advantages Structural Behavior Analysis Typical Details Distortion Corrosion Protection Bibliography Economy in Welded Steelwork Introduction Mechanics of Costing Factors Affecting Welding Costs Concluding Remarks Bibliography About the Author Utpal K. Ghosh worked, among others, with Freeman Fox and Partners, London; Sir William Arrol & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland; and Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Construction Co. Ltd., Kolkata, India, after graduating in civil engineering in 1954 from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur, Calcutta University (currently Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology). Subsequently, he set up his own practice as a consulting engineer. During his long career, he participated in the planning, design, fabrication, erection, and overall management of a wide variety of projects, such as bridges and industrial structures, which included new construction as well as repair and rehabilitation work. He has worked on projects in several countries, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and India. He has published a number of articles and is the author of two books titled Design and Construction of Steel Bridges and Repair and Rehabilitation of Steel Bridges. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK), and a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (UK).
