    Description

Oxford Elizabeth Barrett Browning Selected Writings 2018 Edition by Josie Billington, Philip Davis

This volume in the 21st Century Oxford Authors series offers students and readers a comprehensive selection of the work of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861). Accompanied by full scholarly apparatus, this authoritative edition enables students to study Barrett Browning's work within the rich context of her life and writing career. _x000D__x000D_The revaluation of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's work by feminist scholars has made her an established author in university syllabuses in Britain and in America. Yet the reception of Barrett Browning as a writer within an explicitly female tradition has tended to limit the appreciation of her wider contribution to English literary culture in the nineteenth century, just as her popular image as a ringleted romantic heroine served sentimentally to eclipse her role as a literary pioneer. This_x000D_edition complements or corrects these emphases by being the first edition dedicated to witnessing the progress and growth of the poet's creative direction-from her juvenilia through to her major achievements and beyond. _x000D__x000D_The selection of works presented here appear in the order in which they were originally published, enabling students and readers to experience the contours of Barrett Browning's poetic career. Thus, following selections from published juvenilia, The Battle of Marathon (1820) and 'An Essay on Mind' and Other Poems (1826) and from 'Prometheus Bound' and Miscellaneous Poems (1833), there are more extensive selections from 'The Seraphim' and Other Poems (1838), from Poems 1844 and from Poems 1850_x000D_including the full text of Sonnets from the Portuguese. Substantial excerpts from Casa Guidi Windows (1851) is followed by the full text of Aurora Leigh (1857) and by selections from the posthumous Last Poems (1862). These individual sections are supplemented by careful selections (also_x000D_chronologically ordered) from the correspondence, including the courtship letters with Robert Browning, and, where applicable, from poetry unpublished in the nineteenth century._x000D__x000D_Explanatory notes and commentary are included, to enhance the study, understanding, and enjoyment of these works, and the edition includes an Introduction to the life and works of Barrett Browning, and a Chronology._x000D_ Table of Contents :- _x000D_ Introduction_x000D_ Chronology_x000D_ A Note on the Selection and Ordering_x000D_ Part I: EARLY WORKS AND THE BARRETT FAMILY WRITINGS (1820-33)_x000D_ From The Battle of Marathon (1820)_x000D_ From (unpublished) 'Fragment of An Essay on Woman' (1822)_x000D_ From An Essay on Mind (1826)_x000D_ To My Father on His Birth-Day (1826)_x000D_ Song ('Weep as if you thought of laughter') (1826)_x000D_ Verses to my Brother (1826)_x000D_ Letter to Hugh Stuart Boyd (1828)_x000D_ Diary 1831-2_x000D_ From Preface to translation of Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound (1833)_x000D_ From translation of Prometheus Bound (1833)_x000D_ A True Dream (1833)_x000D_ PART II: THE SERAPHIM AND OTHER POEMS (1838), CORRESPONDENCE 1841-5_x000D_ From Preface_x000D_ From The Seraphim_x000D_ From The Poet's Vow_x000D_ From The Romaunt of Margret_x000D_ The Deserted Garden_x000D_ Death of Bro (1840), Letters (1841-45)_x000D_ SECTION III: POEMS (1844)_x000D_ Dedication: To My Father_x000D_ From Preface_x000D_ Past and Future_x000D_ Irreparableness_x000D_ Grief_x000D_ Tears_x000D_ Substitution_x000D_ Work and Contemplation_x000D_ Letter to John Kenyon_x000D_ from A Drama of Exile_x000D_ An Apprehension_x000D_ To George Sand: A Recognition_x000D_ The Soul's Expression_x000D_ from The Lost Bower_x000D_ The Lady's Yes_x000D_ The Cry of the Children_x000D_ Lady Geraldine's Courtship_x000D_ SECTION IV: The Courtship Correspondence (1845-6)_x000D_ From the letters of EBB and Robert Browning (January 1845- April 1846_x000D_ SECTION V: POEMS 1850_x000D_ Sonnets from the Portuguese_x000D_ A Denial (1856)_x000D_ The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point_x000D_ A Reed_x000D_ A Sabbath Morning at Sea_x000D_ A Woman's Shortcomings_x000D_ A Man's Requirements_x000D_ The Mask_x000D_ SECTION VI: CASA GUIDI WINDOWS (1851)_x000D_ Advertisement to the First Edition_x000D_ from Part I_x000D_ from Part II_x000D_ SECTION VII: AURORA LEIGH (1856)_x000D_ Dedication_x000D_ First Book_x000D_ Second Book_x000D_ Third Book_x000D_ Fourth Book_x000D_ Fifth Book_x000D_ Sixth Book_x000D_ Seventh Book_x000D_ Eighth Book_x000D_ Ninth Book_x000D_ SECTION VIII: LAST POEMS (1862)_x000D_ Bianca Among the Nightingales_x000D_ Mother and Poet_x000D_ A Musical Instrument_x000D_ Lord Walter's Wife_x000D_ Died_x000D_ My Heart and I_x000D_ The Best Thing in the World_x000D_ NOTES_x000D_
