    Description

WIT Press Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions 2014 Edition by C. A. Brebbia

Coastal zones are particularly vulnerable to problems related to population growth and industrial and tourism activities. The resulting ecological, social and economic pressures lead to conflict between different areas. Effective strategies for management of coastal zones should therefore consider them as integrated systems in order to control their dynamic quality. One of the most serious problems affecting coastal areas is the damage resulting from oil and chemical spills. Numerous and frequent spills demonstrate the extent of the damage inflicted on the environment when a large volume of oil is released and, in particular, the susceptibility of the coastal region ecology to these spills. This book brings together papers presented at the Seventh International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions including Oil and Chemical Spill Studies. The Meeting dealt with problems related to monitoring, analysis and modelling of coastal regions, including sea, land and air phenomena, and an important part of the Conference was the discussion of ecological and environmental problems, and the issues of water quality. The Conference also addressed topics related to soil and land spills, and comprised studies of modelling and the fate of oil and chemical slicks as well as the development of spill contingency plans and issues relative to prevention and clean-up measures. The papers presented cover the following topics: ecology and the coastal environment; water quality issues; sediment problems; erosion problems; coastal restoration; computational modelling; wetlands; remote sensing and radiation; atmospheric aspects and flooding; management of risk; automatic integrated modelling; coastal and inland environment; tourism impact. Table of Contents : Section 1: Ecology and the coastal environment The flushing of pollution from recreational boating in tidal embayments with application to Great Salt Pond on Block Island; Assessment of the abundance of actively respiring cells and dead cells within the total bacterioplankton of the Strait of Messina waters; Monitoring activities following the grounding of the MSC Napoli in Lyme Bay, UK, in 2007; Human effects and degradation processes on the Aegean coastal zone; Tourism impact on coastal environment; Impacts of a changing climate and low land use on a Tropical Montane Cloud Forest Section 2: Coastal restoration Environmental enhancement gone awry: characterization of an artificial reef constructed from waste vehicle tires; Evaluation of armor stone performance and deterioration Section 3: Management of risk Predicting ecological resilience of marine benthic communities facing a high risk of oil spills; Modeling riverbank stability and potential risk to development in the Penobscot River estuary of Maine, USA; Data gathering guidelines for the mapping of environmental sensitivity to oil spill of the Italian coastlines; Place of refuge selection for ships aiming at reduction of environmental hazards Section 4: Water quality issues Saline stratification and its influence on fine sediment transport in a semi-enclosed tidal lagoon, West Sussex, UK; Environmental impact on chemical/oil spill in the Persian Gulf; The blue planet earth systems approach (BEPESA) for the study of water related systems Section 5: Sediment transport Influence of climate and anthropogenous activity on the terrigenous sedimentation dynamics of the Sea of Azov in the second part of the XXth century; Pre-reservoirs: a sustainable solution for eroding beaches/deltas of dammed rivers; Characteristics of beach profiles and bar formation changes along the coasts of Hokkaido; A sheet flow model to estimate the sediment transport rate for beaches backed by seawalls Section 6: Coastal dunes Morphodynamics of the Morfa Dyffryn coastal dunes, mid-Wales: photographic survey 1988-2007; Three-dimensional flow simulation over a complex sand dune system
