    Description

Springer Frontiers of Cardiac Electrophysiology 1st Editon 2011 Softbound by M.B. Rosenbaum, Marcelo V. Elizari

The goal of this book is to provide an integrated overview of some intriguing problems of cardiac electrophysiology. Topics have been selected that encompass mainly aspects which have been a matter of concern and interest in our Department over the past few years. We requested from the authors not only that they provide information about their own investiga tions, but also that they integrate their results with those published by oth ers. Furthermore, we urged them to be speculative in their interpretations in order to encourage exploration of related areas of investigation. To this end, the authors have presented their ,contributions in sufficient detail so that the information may not only educate the reader but also encourage and chal lenge him. It is through the concept of total integration -from in vitro to in vivo, from animal to man, from the pure scientist to the clinician -that we hope to advance our understanding of cardiac electrophysiology. The book brings together scientific work in which important advances have been made in the seventies, and in which even more substantial pro gress is likely to be made in the present decade. The chapters have been written by investigators who are authorities in the relevant scientific field. No attempt at summarizing has been made as this may not seldom lead to oversimplification, a risk that we do not dare take. The table of contents and list of contributors are, in this regard, self-explanatory. I: Cardiac electrogenesis.- 1. Disturbances of cardiac electrogenesis.- 2. The role of electrotonus in cardiac electrophysiology.- II: Ventricular repolarization.- 3. T wave abnormalities.- 4. Electrotonic modulation of ventricular repolarization and cardiac memory.- 5. Negative U wave: The clinical significance and the consideration of pathogenesis.- III: Normal and abnormal automaticity.- 6. Physiological basis of normal and abnormal automaticity.- 7. Experiments on abnormal automaticity.- 8. Normal and abnormal ventricular automaticity in the human heart.- 9. Triggered arrhythmias.- 10. The role of triggered activity in clinical arrhythmias.- IV: Ventricular extrasystoles and parasystole.- 11. Models of parasystole and reflection.- 12. Clinical studies on the mechanism of ventricular arrhythmias.- V: Sodium- and calcium-mediated action potentials.- 13. Frequency dependence of artificial slow response excitability.- 14. Role of sodium- and calcium-mediated action potentials in clinical arrhythmias.- 15. Role of the slow inward current in the genesis of cardiac arrhythmias.- 16. Which arrythmias are specifically susceptible to calcium antagonists?.- VI: Normal and abnormal physiology of the AV node.- 17. Propagation through the atrioventricular node: A new hypothesis for an old riddle.- 18. Some examples of Wenckebach periodicity in cardiac tissues, with an appraisal of mechanisms.- 19. The role of the A-V node in supraventricular tachycardias.- VII: Mechanisms of abnormal intraventricular conduction.- 20. Frequency-dependent alterations of conduction in Purkinje fibres. A model of phase-4 facilitation and block.- 21. Recovery of impulse propagation in the bundle branches of the human heart. The different varieties of phase 3 bundle branch block.- 22. Reappraisal of supernormal conduction.- 23. A response to the reappraisal of supernormal conduction.- 24. Mechanism of Mobitz II periodicities.- 25. The different varieties of 2:1 bundle branch block.- VIII: Role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of arrhythmias.- 26. Phasic responses of SA and AV nodes to vagal stimulation.- 27. Role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of ventricular arrhythmias.- 28. Role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of clinical arrhythmias.- IX: Aberrant ventricular conduction.- 29. Aberrant ventricular conduction: experimental studies.- 30. Aberrant ventricular conduction: Electrocardiographic manifestations and mechanism.- 31. Contribution of His bundle recordings to aberrant intraventricular conduction.- X: The natural history of intraventricular block.- 32. The ‘making’ of a bundle branch block.- 33. Contributions of His bundle recordings to understanding intraventricular block: Incidence and prognosis.- XI: Updating the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.- 34. Anatomic substrates of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.- 35. Physiological properties of accessory pathways.- 36. Variants of the preexcitation syndromes.- 37. Diagnosis and treatment of concealed accessory pathways in patients suffering from paroxysmal AV junctional tachycardia.- Index of subjects.
