This volume dealing with basic concepts of polymer polymerisation techniques characterisation and processing of polymers and industrial polymers is the first volume of Handbook of Polymer Science and Technology. This reference text book is intended for the practising polymer technologists rubber and plastic technologists chemical and mechanical engineers industrial chemists and research students. This book also provides an upto date information for the users of polymer products in other industries. This volume is divided into six sections. Section I deals with basic concepts of polymers. Chapter I focuses on introduction to polymer science whi Ie chapter 2 is devoted to natural and synthetic polymers. Section II deals with various polymerisation techniques which refer to the physical aspects of polymerisation reactions and which decide whether the monomer is polymerised in its condensed or gaseous state or whether it is polymerised as such or along with other inert components such as solvents and non-solvents.Section III deals with characterisation of polymers. Knowledge of the solubility of various polymers in different solvents is important in assessing their chemical resistance and their application potentialities in the field of paints fibres and casting films. Keeping this in mind chapter 11 describes the criteria of polymer solubility thermodynamics and phase equilibrium in polymer solutions. Polymers are non- homogenous with respect to molecular sizes and individual characteristics of varying lengths etc.
