Description

This book covers the theory and practice of modern information storage and retrieval, with an emphasis on more recent advances in the field. In addition, because information retrieval has in recent years been done more by "regular" individuals and less by information specialists, the book's focus is on how to design and build systems that will be effective for the user (i.e. less arcane types of search techniques will save time for the user), while still providing the information in the format most easy to use for the user. Additional topics covered include privacy and the freedom of information, the requirements of a networked environment, and user profile modeling. About the Author Robert R. Korfhage holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan and is currently Professor of Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He has more than 40 years of experience in computer and information processing and over 30 years of teaching experience in the field.
