Currently, the excimer laser allows us to perform personalized aspherical treatments, guided by topography or wavefront, with cyclotorsion compensation. Now, why should we consider SMILE?.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newest technique in refractive surgery, in which a femtosecond laser (VisuMax, Carl Zeiss) creates an intrastromal lenticule to correct refractive errors without the necessity of creating a corneal flap. This allows the correction of myopia and astigmatism in a precise and safe way. It is possible to correct spheres from -0,50 to -12 D and cylinders equal or less than 5 D. The amount of tissue that is required to correct a diopter is similar than LASIK or PRK, about 13 microns per diopter. Even though there are studies developing on the correction of hypertropia, this procedure still not available commercially.
