Two current trends are increasing the demand for a book of this type. Solid state physics is an interdiscuplinary discipline. Many non-physicists feel the need for a basic knowledge of solid state physics without having to go too much into details. Also, the "new" bachelor degree has been introduced in Europe. The idea is to make sure that students acquire first a broader knowledge of various subjects, then follow with more in-depth master and Ph.D. degrees.
