Sunity Devee or Suniti Devi (18641932) became the Maharini of the Princely state of Cooch Behar India following her marriage to Nripendra Narayan the Maharaja in 1878 aged only 14. She remained with her father the reknowned Brahmo Samaj reformist for a further two years as her husband left for London to continue his studies immediately after the marriage. She went on to have four sons and three daughters. In 1887 her husband was awarded GCIE and she was awarded CIE the first Indian woman to receive the honour and the couple attended Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1898. Her husband set up a girls school in her name in 1881 and as an educationist and womens rights activist she was closely involved in the schools establishment and running. This memoir was first published in 1921 and is illustrated with 10 photographs.show more
