'The Impact of School Infrastructure on Learning' reviews current research on how school facilities can affect children s learning outcomes and identifies key parameters that can inform the design, implementation, and supervision of future educational infrastructure projects. The book also reflects upon aspects for which the evidence could be strengthened, and it identifies potential areas for further exploratory work. The book is addressed to the policy makers, project managers, architects, school teachers and principals, as well as other specialists dealing with school facilities design.If the agreed goal among educators, policy makers, and the public is to improve student outcomes, there is considerable controversy about which factors are most effective, from increases of teacher compensation and salary to innovative pedagogic strategies to facility improvements. The evidence presented in this report shows that the school facility does indeed provide a significant contribution to student achievement and well-being. The report offers a useful library of recent research to support the connection between facility quality and student outcomes. At the same time, it also points to the unmet need for research to provide verifiable and reliable information on this connection. With such evidence, decision-makers will be better positioned to accurately balance the allocation of limited resources among the multiple competing dimensions of school policy, including the construction and maintenance of the school facility.
