Cambridge Scholars Publishing Translating Across Cultures BAS 21st Annual International Confernce by Hortensia Parlog & Luminita Frentiu
Translating Across Cultures is a collection of nine papers given at the 21st B.A.S./ British and American Studies conference held in Timisoara, in May 2011. They focus on translation problems that may arise at various levels, from word to translation unit, when rendering a literary, legal, economic or a hybrid text genre into a second language, as well as on some of the methodological issues raised by this process. The papers, structured in three sections, try to give answers to questions like why or what cultural elements are important when mediating between languages or cultures, what equivalence can be found for certain cultural lexical items, for certain collocations or for business metaphors in the target language, investigate the translation of the 21st century 'Newspeak', cases of lexical gaps, reveal similarities and particularly differences in the linguistic expression of various concepts, and suggest possible ways of dealing with certain difficult translation problems.
