    Description

Springer Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 10 Proceedings of the 10th Meeting 1st Editon 2013 Softbound by Björn A. Meyerson, Giovanni Broggi, Jose Martin-Rodriguez, Christoph Ostertag, Marc Sindou

These proceedings from the Xth Congress of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in Stockholm reflect the growing interest in these fields of neurosurgery. It is the most extensive volume in this series of publications and it contains a large number of original articles pertaining to the most recent advances in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. Not long ago stereotactic neurosurgery was considered an esoteric sub speciality practised only by those involved in treating movement disorders and pain. In the last decade we have witnessed the incorporation of stereotactic methodology in the management of common neurosurgical diseases, and the stereotactic technique is now practised in all major neurosurgical centers. As with other surgical techniques and tools, however, the utilization of stereotactic methods requires special knowledge and training. This book comprises articles which give insight into new stereotactic applications and technology. For example, the usage of stereotaxis without a frame and the so-called navigator systems in open tumor surgery is dealt with in two papers. The introduction and development of radiosurgery is closely linked to the advancement of stereotactic technique. Radiosurgical treatment of tumors and cerebrovascular diseases has been one of major achievements in modern neurosurgery. This publication contains several original reports illustrating the efficacy of radiosurgery in problematic neurosurgical diseases. Neurotransplantation.- Reparative Strategies in the Brain: Treatment Strategies Based on Trophic Factors and Cell Transfer Techniques.- Neurotransplantation: a Clinical Update.- Computer Assisted CT-Guided Stereotactic Transplantation of Foetal Ventral Mesencephalon to the Caudate Nucleus and Putamen in Parkinson’s Disease.- Regeneration of Adult Dorsal Root Axons into Transplants of Dorsal or Ventral Half of Foetal Spinal Cords.- Electrophysiological Responses in Foetal Spinal Cord Transplants Evoked by Regenerated Dorsal Root Axons.- Psychosurgery.- Present-Day Indications for Capsulotomy.- Dorsomedial Thalamotomy as a Treatment for Terminal Anorexia: a Report of Two Cases.- Movement Disorders.- Chronic VIM Thalamic Stimulation in Parkinson’s Disease, Essential Tremor and Extra-Pyramidal Dyskinesias.- Tremor Reduction by Microinjection of Lidocaine During Stereotactic Surgery.- External and Implanted Pumps for Apomorphine Infusion in Parkinsonism.- Clinical Evaluation of Computed Tomography-Guided versus Ventriculography-Guided Thalamotomy for Movement Disorders.- Stereotactic Techniques and Application.- Stereotactic Localization Using Fast Spin-Echo Imaging in Functional Disorders.- Accuracy of Ventrolateral Thalamic Nucleus Localization Using Unreformatted CT Scans and the B-R-W System. Experimental Studies and Clinical Findings During Functional Neurosurgery.- Functional Neurosurgery Using 3-D computer Stereotactic Atlas.- Stereotactic Biopsy in Cerebral Lesions of AIDS.- Neuronavigator-Guided Cerebral Biopsy.- A Computer Controlled Stereotactic Arm: Virtual Reality in Neurosurgical Procedures.- Radiosurgery.- Brachytherapy — Interstitial Implant Radiosurgery.- Impact of Stereotactic Interstitial Radiation on Brain Capillary Physiology.- Linac-Accelerator-Radiosurgery.- Radiosurgery for Vascular Malformations of the Brain Stem.- Stereotactic Radiotherapy plus Radiosurgical Boost in the Treatment of Large Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations.- Radiosurgery of Cavernous Sinus Tumors.- Gamma Knife Surgery in Acoustic Tumours.- Interstitial Irradiation of Cerebral Gliomas with Stereotactically Implanted Iodine-125 Seeds.- Interstitial Implant Radiosurgery for Cerebral Metastases.- Comparison Between Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Fractionated Radiation for the Treatment of Brain Metastases.- Interstitial Irradiation for Newly Diagnosed or Recurrent Malignant Gliomas: Preliminary Results.- Pain.- The Pathophysiology of Peripheral Neuropathic Pain — Abnormal Peripheral Input and Abnormal Central Processing.- Painful Nerve Injuries: Bridging the Gap Between Basic Neuroscience and Neurosurgical Treatment.- What can the Neurosurgeon Offer in Peripheral Neuropathic Pain.- The Possible Role of the Cerebral Cortex Adjacent to the Central Sulcus for the Genesis of Central (Thalamic) Pain — a Metabolic Study.- Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain.- Motor Cortex Stimulation as Treatment of Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain.- Long-Term Results of Stimulation of the Septal Area for Relief of Neurogenic Pain.- An Animal Model for the Study of Brain Transmittor Release in Response to Spinal Cord Stimulation in the Awake, Freely Moving Rat: Preliminary Results from the Periaqueductal Grey Matter.- Preliminary Results of a Randomized Study on the Clinical Efficacy of Spinal Cord Stimulation for Refractory Severe Angina Pectoris.- Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Neuralgia: Prognostic Factors.- Microsurgical Vascular Decompression (MVD) in Trigeminal and Glosso-Vago-Pharyngeal Neuralgias.
