It is a pleasure to place the latest edition of this textbook into the hands of students as well practitioners of hematology. Hematology in general and laboratory in particular, are in the midst of a revolution brought about by advancing knowledge and technology which resulted in revised versions of various hematologic disorders. The most significant of these evaluations has possibly been the revised version of the WHO Classification of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasms, which because available in publications in 2016. This classification forms the heart of several chapters on neoplastic haematological disorder in the 4th edition. The chapters on acute leukaemia’s, lympho- and myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma and histiocytic disorders have been thoroughly revised and updated. Newer entities have been separated out (for instance mast cell diseases and eosinophilia-associated neoplasms from the MPN), the new diagnostic criteria have been listed, and the rapidly unfolding series of genetic events, underlying the neoplastic transformations have been discussed in detail from a learner's perspective.
