Anumber of schemes and programmes were launched in pursuance of theemphasis embodied in the NPE, 1986 and the POA, 1992. ElementaryEducation is must; social justice and equity are by themselves astrong argument for providing basic education for all. It is anestablished fact that basic education improves the level of humanwell-being and significantly contributes to economic growth. A number of schemes and programmes have been launched at alllevels to ensure free and compulsory education for all children upto the age of 14 years including District Primary EducationProgramme and Teacher Education. The set of seven volumes has beencarved out for pre-service teachers with the hope that this may beuseful to acquaint them with the elementary subjects. About the Author: S Gupta S Gupta is Post Graduate from Delhi University Delhi and hasbeen associated with teaching for the last twenty years. She haswidely travelled and participated in several school programmes. Shehas authored a book entitled Education in Emerging India andco-authored two books with Sh. J C Aggarwal.
