    Description

Springer Experimental Skin Grafts and Transplantation Immunity A Recapitulation 1st Editon 2011 Softbound by D. L. Ballantyne, J. M. Converse

The skin allograft has been used as the test tool since the beginning of investiga tions of the fate of skin transplanted between two individuals of ordinary genetic diversity. This monograph is designed to furnish the transplantation work er with a review of the significant papers in which skin allografts and xeno grafts, applied to experimental animals and man, have played a role in acquiring a body of knowledge concerning the behavior and fate of these transplants and the reaction of the body to their presence. Skin, an essential organ for survival, a barrier between the 'milieu inte rieur' of Claude Bernard and the 'milieu exterieur,' will remain the most frequently used transplant in transplantation research. Because it is highly antigenic, the final solution of the problem of acceptance of allografts of various tissues and organs will probably depend upon the achievement of a permanent survival of skin allografts. My personal interest in transplantation, which originated during my surgi cal training, was rekindled when I met Peter Medawar (today Sir Peter) in England during World War II. I had joined, in 1940, an American Volunteer Surgical Unit (The American Hospital in Britain), organized and headed by Dr. 1 Vascularization of Skin Grafts: Autografts and Allografts.- Phase of Serum Imbibition.- Phase of Graft Revascularization.- 2 Acute Rejection of First-Set Allografts.- Gross Inspection of Grafts In Situ.- Preliminary Histologic Studies.- Histologic Examinations of Grafted Human Skin.- Effect of Cellular Infiltration on the Graft Vessels.- Experimental Vital Skin Microscopy.- Stereomicroscopic Studies of Human Grafts.- Assessment of Graft Behavior by a Combination of Various Assay Methods.- Electron Microscopic Studies.- Experiments with Dye Injection.- Biochemical Studies.- Histochemical Studies.- Transparent Tissue Chamber Studies.- Radioisotope and Autoradiographic Studies.- Comparison Between Conventional and Immediately Vascularized Allografts.- Other Experimental Studies.- Indications for Skin Allografting in Man.- Summary.- 3 Chronic Reaction Patterns of First-Set Skin Allografts.- Studies in the Hamster.- Family Studies.- Summary.- 4 Reaction Patterns of Skin Xenografts.- Biologic Behavior.- Studies with the Chick Embryo as a Graft Recipient.- Experiments with Orthotopic Xenografts.- Clinical Applications of Skin Xenografts.- Summary.- 5 Role of the Dosage Phenomenon in Allograft and Xenograft Reactions.- Preliminary Experiments with Graft Size.- Other Experimental Studies.- Effect of Specially Treated Host Beds on the Survival of Massive Skin Grafts.- Experiments with Massive Xenografts.- Summary.- 6 Behavior of Preserved Skin Grafts in Their Hosts.- Storage at Temperatures Above Freezing.- Preservation by Freezing and Freeze-Drying.- 7 Survival and Rejection of Second-Set Skin Allografts.- Acceptance and Vascularization of Repeat-Set Skin Grafts.- Accelerated Rejection Phenomenon.- White Graft Reaction.- Chronic Rejection Patterns of Second-Set Grafts.- Behavior and Fate of Second-Set Massive Allografts.- Summary.- References.
