The Presidency of Madras presents probably a more varied flora than any other tract of equal area in India. This phenomenon is due to the combined effects of its geographical situation and its topography. The Madras Presidency is divided into five main floristic regions 1. The Sal Region in the North, 2. Dakkan Region, 3. Semi-Desert Region, 4. Wet Region and 5. Alpine Regions. The vegetation of these five regions have been described briefly. The most interesting and one that distinguishes it from that of the rest of the Indian Peninsula is found in the dense and evergreen forests of the West and South with their wealth of subtropical species.
