The author has made an attempt to explore R.K. Narayan’s treatment of Indian women in his novels. The book presents Indian women in their various roles as orthodox grandmother, self-sacrificed Gandhian, traditional Hindu wife, traditional Indian mother and seeker of emancipation, and artist/ companion and popular heroine. The book also attempts to show R.K. Narayan’s women characters playing significant roles in the family as well as in the society. In fact, these women are presented as replicas of common Indian women who stand both for change and for resistance against change.
