The Manual is intended to be a brief compilation of information available related to breeding of fruit crops. This has been presented in five sections: 1. Prologue giving historical account of origin of fruits, their culture, domestication and breeding starting from the prehistoric era, achievements made, major objectives and the problems being faced; 2. Germplasm resources, their conservation and management; 3. Breeding methods; the techniques and achievements made in each fruit belonging to: 4. Tropical and subtropical, and 5. Temperate region. Effort has been made to integrate the conventional and biotechnological breeding approaches. The Epilogue at the end points out the thrust areas such as introduction and domestication of new crops, intergeneric and interspecific hybridization, polyploidy and mutation breeding, marker assisted selection, molecular genetics, genomics, biotechnology and CRISPR/Cas9 system, etc. that may contribute in future fruit breeding efforts. List of references has been given along with those suggested for future reading.
