This book is divided into four main themes. The introductory theme is a brief general overview of the role of nutrition in human health. The second section presents various types of physical exercises including cardiovascular training, resistance training, aerobic and anaerobic exercises, bioenergetics and energy balance and the nutritional requirements associated with these various fitness well as exercise and nutritional requirements in special populations including the pre-pubertal, young, elderly and disabled. Section 3 focuses specifically on sports and nutritional requirements. The molecular mechanisms involved in muscle building are the theme of Section 4. Section 5 is an exhaustive review of various food, minerals, supplements, phytochemicals, amino acids, transition metals, small molecules and other ergogenic agents, that have been implicated in muscle building and human performance. A chapter on doping in sports which is included in this section illustrates the various agents that have been used for performance enhancement and their effects, adverse effects, alleged benefits together with current standards in doping. The uniqueness of this book is the recommendation of supplements and other nutrients for enhanced sports performance and muscle growth. By addressing various aspects of sports and nutrition in human health, examining the cutting-edge scientific research relating to muscle physiology, providing a comprehensive review of food and supplements affecting human health and well-being, this book furthers our understanding of the nutritional advantages in enhanced human performance and exercise. It discusses impact of nutrition including food, minerals, vitamins, hormones, trace elements, etc. that can significantly attenuate/improve human performance and sports. It addresses the molecular and cellular pathways involved in the physiology of muscle growth the mechanisms by which nutrients affect muscle health, growth and maintenance. It encompasses multiple forms of sports / performance and the salient contribution of appropriate nutrition on special populations, including nutritional guidelines and recommendations to athletes. It provides strong focus on muscle building.
