Description
Ess Ess Publications Operations Research For Library And Information Professionals-Hardbound by Dariush Alimohammadi
During the past decades, especially after the World War II, Operations Research (OR) has played an important role in economic and social development of countries. From the early days, OR considered utilizing mathematical models to solve military problems. Gradually, success in OR projects encouraged professionals from other disciplines to use its techniques and tools in their own fields. Library and Information Science (LIS) was one of the domains affected by the OR and used it extensively. This book examines OR in LIS, in a manner that benefits academic libraries. It has a systematic structure through which understanding the basics of OR is possible for librarians, especially those who don't have sufficient knowledge and experience in mathematics. The book begins by defining OR and illustrating its evolution. Then, OR methodology is introduced and its characteristics are discussed. The most important techniques of OR are argued throughout, from absolute to probabilistic and mixed models. This overview is supported with real examples from the field of LIS. The book allows librarians to become familiar with the OR as a mathematical approach for the handling of daily issues and to be acquainted with the areas of LIS that are susceptible for mathematical modeling using OR.
