India ranks first in milk production contributing 23 per cent of global milk production. It has grown at a compound annual growth rate of about 6.2 per cent to reach 209.96 million tonnes in 2020-21 from 146.31 million tonnes in 2014-15 .The top three milk producing states are U.P., Rajasthan and M.P. However, Buffalo continue to be the key milk producer with almost 53% of the total milk produced contributed by it. There is a large scope for further enhancement in the areas where white revolution had already made an impact. Sheep and goat with their multi-facet utility for meat, milk, wool, skin and manure, form an important component of rural economy particularly in the arid, semi-arid and mountainous areas of the country. It provides a dependable source of income through sale of meat ,wool and animals. They play an important role in the livelihood of a large percentage of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers engaged in goat and sheep rearing. This manual would be forthe use of undergraduate and post-graduate students in Dairy Science, Animal Science and Veterinary Science as the book covers all the aspects of day-to-day managemental practices of dairy animals, sheep and goat production in simple language.
