Throughout Saffron and Silk, readers enter into the bride's new family and their Kerala origins and into some of the rich culture of Tamil legends and history. The death in custody of a man, a former member of parliament, just a few months after the author had met him, hints at some of the darker elements of India.At the heart of the story is the pogrom sparked by the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984.
