The Akas, one of the major tribe of Arunachal Pradesh (India) are undergoing significant transformation and change in all spheres of, life with the passage of time. A comprehensive work on social, economic, demographic and cultural change of the tribe has been presented on the basis of first hand information collected through field survey. Earlier workers (Sinha 1962, Elwin 1968, Kholey 1997) studied Akas from historical and anthropological point of view by selecting few villages, The present work considers all Aka villages and focuses on their transition in three different time period i.e. post independence, statehood period and 2000 onwards. The area inhabited by Akas is delineated on Survey of India topographical maps as narrated by the elderly people during field study. A comparative study is also made by using census data of 1971, 1981,1991 and 2001 and supplemented by field survey during 2006.
