Quality of human environment is largely dependent on the availability of water which is unique to our planet. Although water is most abundant in the biosphere but often it is a major cause of concern for human welfare. Indiscriminate discharge of domestic and industrial effluents progressively deteriorates the quality of surface water sources. The importance of water management is obvious for a country like India where flood, drought and water-borne diseases are recurring features in many parts of the country. Effective Implementation of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act passed by the Parliament in 1974 calls for a better understanding of the causes and problems of water pollution.
The book provides a broad survey of water pollution and management issues from a multidisciplinary viewpoint. The articles comprising this volume have been selected from a series of lectures delivered at an Aquatic Ecology Course held at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, with the assistance of the Central Board for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution, New Delhi.
