    About the Author:
    Louis Quin is an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina -- Wilmington, which he joined in 1997 as part-time Distinguished Visiting Professor. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Quin started his academic career in 1956 with the faculty of Chemistry  at Duke University, serving as Chairman (1970-76) and being named a James B. Duke Professor in 1981. He retired in 1986, becoming Emeritus Professor, and went to University of Massachusetts-Amherst as Head of Chemistry (for 8 years), retiring again in 1996, also as an Emeritus Professor.

    John Tyrell is Visiting Scientist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where among other courses, he teaches "Fundamentals of Heterocyclic Chemistry", originally developed by Dr. Quin. Dr. Tyrell has more than 20 years of industrial research experience, much with heterocyclic chemistry: Lederle Labs., 1978-1979; General Electric Plastics, 1980-1990; OxyChem, 1990-2000. He holds 68 patents.
